Each blended learning and online course will be unique. However, well designed facilitated courses envisage specific roles and responsibilities for the online facilitator(s).
Study Salmon's 5 Stage Model below to see an example of these roles and responsibilities and when they should be deployed during the duration of a course or during the term.
At each stage of Salmon's model a mix of different skill sets are required which we will now investigate further. In this course we will use Burge's (1995) categorization of four online facilitation skills:Pedagogical - promoting online learning,
Social - nurturing a conducive online environment for learning,
Managerial - managing and administering the course and
Technical - providing first line technical support to learners.
