Technology users often see netiquette as one of the most pressing problems when dealing with Digital Citizenship. So what exactly is 'netiquette'? Simply put, netiquette is internet etiquette.

As you found out in the video that you watched, netiquette means behaving appropriately online. In much the same way as our learners need to learn what is and isn't polite or acceptable behaviour in everyday life, as educators we also need to guide them on how to behave appropriately online. We need to teach them to become good digital citizens. Let's have a look at what it takes to be a good digital citizen.

Bad netiquette | Why this is a problem |
---|---|
1) Copying too many people | People are busy and they don’t need unnecessary emails filling their inbox. This may also be marked as a spam message |
2) No subject | Always include a subject line so the audience knows what the email is about |
3) All capitals | This looks like the sender is shouting |
4) Slang | This is a work email and slang is inappropriate |
5) Not addressed to anyone | How will this email get the attention of the correct person if it is not addressed to anybody? |
6) No sign off | Email etiquette dictates that we sign off our emails, and it is polite to do so |
