  • Unit 01: Imperatives in the South Africa ICT in Education policy


  • Unit Introduction

    In this unit we will study the national policies on ICT in Education and ask you to design, modify and/or implement classroom practices that support these policies. To be able to do this, we need to be able to answer these questions: 'Do you currently understand why the Department of Education has identified the use of ICT as an important component of our teaching?' and 'What are the challenges of using ICT in our teaching?'

    By the end of this unit you should be able to:

      "Currently, education institutions are tackling issues of excellence and equity. They are creating new learning environments that model a spirit of inquiry, inclusiveness and interdependence with learners who represent a wide array of cultures, languages and social backgrounds. Within this context, e-Learning has the potential to offer teachers and learners access to a variety of learning and teaching support material that promotes the appreciation of diversity, a collective identity across the institutions and begins to connect them to the broader societal goals." (White Paper on e-Education, p 20.)

      How might you implement this policy objective in your classroom?


      1. Use the forum below to first discuss with your peers how you might implement this policy in the classroom. Make sure you engage with what others are saying. Listen and think before attempting the assignment.

        1. Develop a lesson plan in any software package you prefer (e.g. word processor, presentation package or use the text box in the assignment tool below  etc.) that explains what you could do to implement the policy statement in YOUR classroom. You could use the following structure:
          • Introduction (include your name, class and grade)
          • Curriculum/Syllabus (What specific objective do you want the students to achieve?)
          • Class Activities (What do the students do in this lesson?)
          • Role of Technology (How does technology contribute to learning?)
          • Lesson output (What do the students create/prepare to demonstrate learning?)
