  • Introduction to ICT in Education

    • Recommended time: 90 minutes

    • Sub-unit Competency

      In this sub-unit, we will investigate the policy environment in which we work. What are the national priorities in terms of ICT and particularly the Kenya National ICT Masterplan? Once complete, you should be able to explain the national priorities for ICT with regard to education.

    • Activity 1: National ICT Policy

      1. Study the introductory reading below entitled 'Global and Kenyan ICT Perspectives'
      1. Access the National ICT Policy within the National ICT Master Plan below and read the vision and guiding principles (See Section 3 p38-40) and then look at the small section on Education on page 79.
      1. What benefits can school stakeholders derive from an understanding of the National ICT Policy? Use the chat below to discuss this question with your colleagues.
      1. In the forum below, discuss if the policy covers ICT in education comprehensively.

  • Kenya's Vision for ICT in Education

    • Recommended time: 90 minutes

    • Sub-unit Competency

      In this sub-unit we will investigate the policy environment further. What are the national priorities in terms of ICT and Education and particularly the ICT in Education Vision? Once complete you should be aware of the beneficial role ICT is expected to bring to education.

    • Activity 2: ICT in Education Vision

      1. Study the introductory reading entitled 'Kenya ICT in Education Vision' below.
      1. Read the National Education Sector Plan (2014) particularly p80-83 which focuses specifically on ICT in Education. Then study the Sessional Paper #2 (2015).

    • Portfolio Assignment: Policy and Classroom Practice

      Sessional Paper #2 of 2015 section 7.4 says "ICT is a major vehicle for teaching and learning from the earliest years. It is at a very young age that learners begin to acquire digital skills which they increasingly use to explore and exploit the world of information and to craft that into knowledge. ICT facilitates the opportunity for more student-centred teaching, more self-learning and more peer teaching. It also provides greater opportunity for teacher-to-teacher, and student-to-student communication and collaboration and access to the worldwide web and the learning resources contained thereon." (p51)
