There are many online collaborative tools. Each group has their own preferences. Famous examples include Facebook and Twitter but here are a couple more:

WhatsApp: this is becoming a common tool for collaboration. WhatsApp Messenger is available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone and Nokia.
