Unit 3: AI tools in Education & Data Work
Introduction
The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, particularly in emergency and crisis contexts, is rapidly evolving. While AI holds immense promise for improving data collection and analysis, its implementation in this sensitive field is marked by both significant opportunities and critical challenges... Introduction
In this section let us investigate a number of different AI platforms that allow easy access. We will talk about how they can be differentiated and where their strengths are. We will also discuss how to write an effective prompt when working with AI. Keep notes on which ones you think align with your skill set and working requirements.
Resources
Access each of the AI platforms and evaluate their ease of use, accuracy and flexibility.
Popular Generative AI Platforms
Popular Technology Tools with AI Features
You don’t always have to access a dedicated AI platform. Many of our common digital tools now include AI functions. For example Co-pilot has been integrated directly into the MS Office suite applications. It can generate Word and Excel files as well as construct PowerPoint presentations etc.
Tips on writing good AI prompts
To get the most out of an AI platform it is important to know what to ask it. In this section we will learn how to write good prompts so that the response from the AI is close to our requirements. Keep an ear open for the six components of a good prompt: 1] Role/Voice, 2] Context, 3] Task, 4] Format, 5] Rules, and 6] Example.
Introduction
AI use, while useful, is also laden with ethical considerations. We will use a UNESCO publication, to unpack some of these considerations.
This UNESCO publication provides a globally accepted framework with a strong emphasis on equity, inclusion, and the needs of developing countries, including specific guidance for the Education sector.
Resource
Access the resource below. make notes on what you think are the most important of the ethical considerations.
Working in small groups, discuss how AI tools could support EiE work such as reporting, data analysis, translation, or planning. Your group should identify possible benefits of AI, potential risks or ethical concerns, and the kinds of human oversight that are still necessary when using AI-generated content or analysis. Each group will present their reflections to the class for discussion. Note: This Moodle forum activity should only be used if all participants have been registered and enrolled on the Moodle system, as the activity itself is intended primarily as a face-to-face classroom discussion rather than an online forum exercise.
Task
Use an AI tool to help analyse and summarise EiE data.
Scenario
You are given attendance and dropout data from a crisis-affected county.
| Indicator | Value |
|---|---|
| Attendance Rate | 68% |
| Dropout Rate | 19% |
| Schools with Drinking Water | 32% |
