      • The teachers' role in the achievement of these learning outcomes
      • How ECD children learn
      • What role do you, as the school leader, play in the achievement of the above?

      Forum discussion
      The graph in the tutorial illustrated the rate of return to human capital investment vs the age of the learner. Discuss the findings of this graph by clicking on the forum discussion icon below. Do you feel that it is applicable and relevant to the current situation in Zimbabwe and even in your district?

    • Assignment
      Having participated in a discussion with your peers and received various points of view, now contextualize the principles that were covered in the tutorial by creating a PowerPoint presentation. Ensure that your presentation covers the following:

      • Is ECD deemed important enough in your school and district? 
      • If not, how will you, as a school leader, go about changing this situation?
      • Do you feel that the investment into ECD in your district / school is adequate relative to the number of ECD learners?
      • If yes - how have you allocated the funds? If no, how will you address this shortfall?
      • At your school, do you feel that the ECD teachers possess the correct qualities and skills required? Are the ECD learning outcomes being achieved? How will you, as a leader, go about improving the competency of your teachers?
      • Illustrate how your school has encouraged 'play' as a form of learning


      This assignment should be completed as honestly as possible - the exercise is one of reflection and how current situations can be improved. Use this as an opportunity to engage with your peers and colleagues - they are most likely in the same situation that you find yourself in and sharing information on what works / doesn't work is hugely beneficial and can ultimately result in both time and cost savings.

      Now that you have an understanding of what ECD is, the importance of it, how children in this age group learn, their learning outcomes and how you as a school leader can influence this process, let's take a step back and explore in the next module, how a child's brain actually develops and what factors influence brain development.
