  • Welcome


    • By the end of this unit you should be able to describe the functions and purposes of internet in the classroom and demonstrate the capability of using internet.      

                   Learning Objectives:

          1. Know and understand different internet applications;
          2. Identify different areas where internet functions are applicable in the classroom; 
          3. Identify the threats to students of using the Internet


       4 hours


      This unit will be facilitated at the ICT Essentials workshop, however, the LMS will be used to provide access to the resources and activity tools such as the forum and to allow learners to submit their internet assignments using the assignment tool.

    • The Internet is a large computer network linking smaller computer networks worldwide. This network allows information to be transferred between computers and allows anyone with access to the Internet to find information from millions of different sources around the world. 

      The Internet is a vast source of information that is constantly changing and expanding. The most popular free Internet service is the World Wide Web (WWW). The WWW allows people to look at information easily by using ‘Hyper Text Transfer Protocol’ (HTTP). HTTP is a set of rules for exchanging information on the Internet. It performs the ‘search and retrieve’ functions for information. 

      This course will guide you through the basics while providing up-to-date information on the latest online tools and technologies.

    • According to Wikipedia the Internet is described;

      "The Internet is the global system of interconnected computer networks that use the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link devices worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of private, public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope, linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical networking technologies. The Internet carries an extensive range of information resources and services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents and applications of the World Wide Web (WWW), electronic mail, telephony, and file sharing."   • Search engines

    • A web search engine is a software system that is designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. The search results are generally presented in a line of results often referred to as search engine results pages (SERPs). The information may be a mix of web pages, images, and other types of files. Unlike web directories, which are maintained only by human editors, search engines also maintain real-time information by running an algorithm on a web crawler. (Wikipedia)


    • Let us get some practice searching the web. Use  a search engine, like Google, and work through the GFC Learn Free Search Better tutorial below to improve your searches and evaluate your results in order to find the most reliable information.

  • Internet safety


    • 60 minutes


    • Web safety, or online safety or Internet Safety, is the knowledge of maximizing the user's personal safety and security risks to private information and property associated with using the internet, and the self-protection from computer crime in general. The number of internet users continues to grow worldwide, internets, governments and organizations have expressed concerns about the safety of children using the Internet. Safer Internet Day is celebrated worldwide in February to raise awareness about internet safety. (Wikipedia)


    • By watching the Internet Safety video below you will gain the strategies, skills, and mindset needed to protect yourself, your computer, and your privacy when you connect to the Internet.

  • School internet safety policy

    • As we encourage our students to use the Internet as a tool for learning we also need to put in place structures to protect them. A school policy on Internet safety is a great way to ensure all staff and students follow safe proceedures when using the internet.


    • This activity is a portfolio assignment. Read the information below and complete your tasks for this unit but remember to submit the final document using the assignment upload tool below.

    • Step 1
      Work through the various readings and tutorials provided in this unit. This will provide you with a good overview of the many online threats that your students could be exposed to. Next, you can complete the GFC Learn Free Internet Safety tutorial below. This tutorial outlines the issues you need to think about to protect your students.


    • Step 2
      Use the forum below to discuss with the group what you believe should be in a School Internet Safety Policy. Secondly, share with the group what you think the challenges are around developing a School Internet Policy.

    • Step 3

      Now, use a search engine to locate a School Internet Safety Policy template/example online that can be adapted in your school. 
      Finalize a one page document where you outline rules and procedures to protect students at your school. This is effectively a proposal for School Administrators to consider as they start to adopt computers and the internet usage. 

      Step 4
      Use the assignment tool below to submit your draft policy to the course facilitators.
