UNESCO. (2021). AI Ethics and Artificial Intelligence

This is an excellent resource because:

  1. Global Standard with Relevance to South Sudan: It is the first global standard-setting instrument on the ethics of AI, adopted by all 193 UNESCO Member States, including those in the African Union. This gives it international legitimacy and a strong basis for national policy.
  2. Explicit Focus on Global South/LMICs: The Recommendation places a special emphasis on addressing the needs and contributions of Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) and tackling the digital divide, making its principles directly applicable to the context of South Sudan.
  3. Includes an Entire Chapter on Education: It goes beyond general principles to include specific policy action areas, with a dedicated section on Education and Research, addressing issues like:

      • Promoting AI literacy.
      • Ensuring an inclusive and equitable integration of AI in education.
      • Protecting students' data and privacy.
      • Monitoring the impact of AI on teachers and learners.
